|Speeches|Lord Thomas

Speeches by the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales and The Rt Hon Elizabeth Truss MP as she is sworn in as Lord Chancellor, July 21 2016.

The Lord Chief Justice said: “The swearing in of a new Lord Chancellor is, of course, always an historic occasion. Today is no exception. The office of Lord Chancellor spans the history of our nation. It can be traced back to Anglo-Saxon times. It has survived civil war, restoration, 19th century industrialisation and, more recently, constitutional reform. It remains central to our constitution.” – Full speech below.

The Lord Chancellor said: “I am delighted to have been appointed to this role….It’s a privilege and an honour for me to have been sworn in today as the first woman Lord Chancellor.” – The full speech by The Rt Hon Elizabeth Truss MP can be read on the Ministry of Justice website.
