High Court Judge Appointment (Queen’s Bench Division): Julian Knowles

The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Mr Julian Bernard Knowles QC to be a Justice of the High Court with effect from 2 October 2017 consequential to the elevation of Dame Kathryn Mary Thirlwall.

The Lord Chief Justice will assign Mr Julian Bernard Knowles to the Queen’s Bench Division.

 Julian Bernard Knowles, aged 48, will be known as The Honourable Mr Justice Julian Knowles. He was called to the Bar (I) in 1994 and took Silk in 2011. He was appointed as a Recorder in 2009 and as a Deputy High Court Judge in 2017.

Dame Kathryn Mary Thirlwall, aged 59, was called to the Bar, (Middle Temple), 1982 (Bencher 2008). She was appointed as an Assistant Recorder in 1998, as Queen’s Counsel in 1999 and as a Recorder in 2000. She has been a Judge of the High Court of Justice, Queen’s Bench Division, since April 2010. She served as a Presiding Judge on the Midland Circuit between 2011 and 2015, she was appointed to the Sentencing Council in April 2016 and as a Lady Justice of Appeal in 2017.
