High Court Judge Appointment (Queen’s Bench Division): Andrew Baker

The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Mr Andrew William Baker QC to be a Justice of the High Court with effect from 1 November 2016 consequential to the retirement of Sir Andrew Smith.

The Lord Chief Justice will assign Mr Andrew William Baker to the Queen’s Bench Division.

Andrew William Baker, aged 50, will be known as The Honourable Mr Justice Andrew Baker. He was called to the Bar (L) in 1988 and took Silk in 2006. He was appointed as a Recorder in 2012.

Sir Andrew Smith, aged 68 was called to the Bar (M) in 1974, took Silk in 1990 and elected a Bencher in 1999. He was appointed an Assistant Recorder in 1992, a Recorder in 1996 and a Legal Member of the Restricted Patients Panel (Mental Health Review Tribunal) in 1999. He was appointed a Judge of the High Court (Queen’s Bench) in 2000, Presiding Judge for the North East Circuit from 2003 to 2006 and a Judge in Charge, Commercial Court in 2008.
