His Honour Judge Peter William Birts QC retires as a Circuit Judge with effect from 10 February 2016.

His Honour Judge Birts QC (70) was called to the Bar (G) in 1968 and took Silk in 1990 (NI in 1996). He was elected a Bencher of Gray’s Inn in 1998. He was appointed a Recorder in 1989, a Member of the Bar Council from 1989 to 1995 (Chairman of the Legal Aid and Fees Committee from 1994 to 1995), a Member of the Judicial Studies Board (Main Board and Civil and Family Committee from 1991 to 1996) and County Court Rules Committee from 1991 to 1999. He was appointed Assistant Parliamentary Boundary Commissioner from 1992 to 1995 and Legal Member of the Mental Health Review Tribunal (Restricted Patients Panel) in 1994 (now known as Judge of the First Tier Tribunal (Health, Education and Social Care Chamber)). He was appointed a Deputy High Court Judge in 2000, a Circuit Judge in 2005 and a Member of the Parole Board in 2006.
