Special Immigration Appeals Commission: Appointment of a New Chairman

The Lord Chancellor has appointed The Honourable Mr Justice Irwin as the Chairman of the Special Immigration Appeals Commission from 1 January 2013, in succession to Mr Justice Mitting who will reach the end of his term on 31 December 2012.

Sir Stephen (John) Irwin (59) was called to the Bar (G) in 1976. He took Silk in 1997, became a Bencher of Grays’ Inn in 2002. He was appointed as a Recorder in 2000 and was the Chairman of the Bar Council in 2004. He was appointed as a High Court Judge, Queen’s Bench Division in May 2006. He has sat in the Administrative Court since 2007, and in 2010 was approved to sit as a Judge by request for the Upper Tribunal, assigned to the Administrative Appeals and Asylum and Immigration Chambers. He was appointed as a member of SIAC in July 2012, having previously served as a Presiding Judge on the Northern Circuit from January 2008 to July 2012. The appointment as Chairman of SIAC is for three years from 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2015.
