Decision by HH Judge Bevan to grant bail:  R -v- Weddell

14 January 2008

Statement from the Judicial Communications Office

In every case, the Bail Act 1976 governs the decision whether or not bail should be granted. Under the Act, there is a general right to bail which applies unless the case falls within specific criteria laid out in the Act itself.

In this case the Judge, having heard the evidence, concluded that the defendant should be granted conditional bail.
The conditions included:

    • That surety of £200,000 be provided before release
    • Conditions on where he must reside
    • Conditions on reporting to the police
