Queen’s Bench Division Deputy HCJ 2009

Queen’s Bench Division: deputy High Court judges under section 9(1) Supreme Court Act 1981

Expressions of Interest 2009

Expressions of interest are invited from anyone wishing to be authorised as a deputy High Court judge under section 9(1) of the Supreme Court Act 1981 to undertake work in the Administrative Court, the Commercial Court and Technology and Construction Court, the Mercantile Court and for general Queen’s Bench work.

Authorisations are only open to serving Circuit Judges and Recorders, and this exercise is for the Queen’s Bench Division only. A separate process will take place for the Chancery Division at a later date.

The closing date will be close of business, Friday 3 July

The qualities

The qualities that candidates need to demonstrate are:-

  • the ability to deal with cases that would otherwise be dealt with by High Court Judges, by reference to the current requirements for selecting candidates for the High Court Bench;
  • expertise and legal knowledge in the relevant field, and in view of the Proceeds of Crime Act, criminal work at a sufficiently high level;
  • an established reputation for sound judgment  (i.e. analysis and independent decision making);
  • an efficient and vigorous approach to the conduct of all proceedings;
  • a fair and balanced approach to litigants and court users, showing sensitivity to the diverse needs and backgrounds of all who appear in court, including court staff.

Please make your application by reference to these qualities.

How to express your interest
As in previous years you should send your application to one of a number of judicial ‘reception centres’. These will enable you to submit an application to a judge who, for example, is aware of your work. These include the Presiding Judges and the various component parts of the Queens Bench Division based at the RCJ. Once this process is complete the President of the Queen’s Bench Division will make the final decision on those to be authorised as deputy High Court judges.
