Senior Presiding Judge (SPJ) - Lord Justice Goldring
The Senior Presiding Judge (SPJ) is a Board member of HM Courts and Tribunals Service and oversees the work of Presiding Judges on each circuit in England and Wales, providing a general point of liaison between the judiciary, the courts and government departments.
The Rt Hon Lord Justice Goldring is the Senior Presiding Judge, who oversees the work of the Presiding Judges in each circuit in England and Wales.
Born 9 November 1944 Lord Justice Goldring was called to the Bar in 1969 and appointed a Queen’s Counsel (QC) in 1987. He subsequently sat as a Recorder from 1987 until 1999 and a Deputy High Court Judge from 1996 to 1999.
He sat as a Deputy Senior Judge, Sovereign Base Areas, Cyprus between 1991 and 1999 and was then appointed a Judge of the Courts of Appeal of Jersey and Guernsey from 1998-1999. In 1999 he became a Judge of the Queen’s Bench Division which was a post he retained until 2008.
Between 2001 and 2004 he was Presiding Judge of the Midland Circuit and was appointed the Commissioner of the Judicial Appointments Commission between 2005 and 2008.
From October 2008 he was the Deputy Senior Presiding Judge of England and Wales and succeeded Lord Justice Leveson as Senior Presiding Judge from 1 January 2010.
